Proper Storage of Stainless Steel Electrodes
Stainless Steel electrodes are considered Low Hydrogen products. To maximize the performance and metallurgical integrity of your stainless covered electrodes, proper care and handling are essential. These products must be handled and stored in a way similar to that used for mild steel and low alloy electrodes. All Stainless Steel electrode products are packaged in hermetically sealed cans, which are designed to prevent moisture from being absorbed by the product. Once the container is opened, however, the electrodes must be properly stored in a climate-controlled rod oven, just like a 7018 or other low hydrogen electrode. The temperature within the oven is recommended to be between 225-300° F. If the electrodes are exposed to moisture for an excessive period of time, resulting in either poor performance or porosity, these electrodes must be reconditioned. Reconditioning times and temperatures will vary from electrode to electrode. Consult ESAB Marketing Bulletin EMB-1063 for specific times and temperatures.
